Just wanted to say a big ole GIANT… honest to goodness… from the top of my heart cuz it’s bigger than the bottom of my heart… for realzies… THANK YOU… all of YOU for the massive outpouring of kind words and tips and suggestions and just plain ole support regarding my post yesterday.

Breast feeding is a tough thing to talk about sometimes… it’s personal and especially telling the world that your child is on formula… in today’s judging society.. is not easy.

I wanted to put my story out these because I wanted to connect with women who have gone through something similar and I also think it’s OK that I am going through this and formula is OK. and I should not beat myself up over not being able to produce milk.

I have numerous emails and Facebook messages sent to me from YOU… dear reader… saying… “it happened to me”, “ditto”, “hang in there”, “we formula fed our kids too”. I’m really grateful and fortunate to have such a strong online community of mamabears! and JaimeG – Thanks for the late night ” you will be OK” texts.

And I THANK YOU for this. Knowing that what I am going through is in NO WAY uncommon makes my mind settle down and I am in a much better and stronger place because of this.

I wish more people would talk about their struggles with breastfeeding. I have read so much material on what to do when preparing for baby and would always skim over the breast-feeding parts because:

  1.  There was never an emphasis made on the commonality of the struggles of breast-feeding.
  2.  It could NEVER happen to me.. right!

Breastfeeding… as natural as it should be… is incredibly unnatural… as I am finding out.

My update: Went to the doctor yesterday. He said I do not have Mastitis but what I am going through is fairly common. He said with rest and hot showers and “keep doing what I’m doing” I should be as good as new by friday. Today I feel a million times better! He also said that his 4 kids are formula fed because his wife had a similar issue and 2 of his kids are twins. When I told him about Thoms clamping down on my nipple with his gums, he said it’s probably because the baby is frustrated with the low milk production. “take a break for a few days, let the nipple heal, keep pumping, skin to skin and try again“.

So again… THANK YOU… YOU… for checking in on me and giving me such valuable advice. I am trying all of your tips… everyone… even the… hang upside down by you toes until something starts to drip out ..ha!

By now you have probably seen the shocking *gasp* pic on the cover of Time Magazine. The mag comes out tomorrow but the image is viral. It struts a very attractive- not an ounce of fat on her body, blonde haired, tall – 26 year old mom, standing upright and looking right into the camera while her 3year old son stands on a little chair sucking on her breast. {p.s. – fast forward 15 years from today – this kid is NEVER going to live this down!}

Hmm… Happy Mothers day y’all!

The headline reads.. ARE YOU MOM ENOUGH?

The article is about attachment parenting and yada yada… go read it if you care.

My issue is the question presented. Asking me… AM I MOM ENOUGH?

Mom enough for what? for who? and who is judging?

Let me tell you right now that there are so many pressures being a parent, specifically a mother.  Mothers constantly juggle family life, career, loss of career,  social life and that ever-present “I am losing my identity” crisis.

So why is TIME magazine asking me if I am mother enough and what does that mean and how is TIME justifying this?

I skipped the baby years with Lily. We adopted her when she was 3 years old. She was potty trained, speaking, walking, eating solids and she was awesome.

So does this disqualify my mommyhood status?

I didn’t suffer through the infant years and went straight for the cute years?  I didn’t breastfeed, or practice attachment parenting, diaper changes, or have months of sleepless nights due to crying baby…what else am I missing?

I might just not be MOM enough.

Of course this article has to come out during Mothers Day, why celebrate the good of motherhood when we can ask them a question to make them feel insecure.

My house is messy, I sometimes forget Lily’s snack, I still have christmas presents wrapped that need to be sent to my god children, I don’t cook often, I don’t plan meals, my laundry is overflowing because the laundry fairy has quit us, the guinea pigs cage is not clean right now, the flowers are not planted, my kitchen apron.. i don’t have a kitchen apron, I don’t have full make up and a dress with stilettos when I greet my chirpy kid from school every day and I …. oh gosh i could go on!

But I AM mother enough and so are you and don’t let some sensational mag cover desperate for selling issues at our expense make you feel any different.

Be proud of your ways and charge forward, that little one looking up at you thinks you are the QUEEN BEE so own it!

What is KONY 2012?

I received this video about KONY 2012 from a handful of my friends yesterday. They sent it to me via email and posted on my Facebook Wall. I have to admit that I deleted the video without even looking at it from Facebook. I sincerely thought it was some sort of rogue independent party political campaign and just did not want it clouding up my Facebook space.

After I saw this video popping up from multiple friends and even via email with comments like “This is going to change your life” or “so touching, let’s make it happen” or “Maria please blog about this so your readers can learn about Joseph Kony” I had to take a second to watch it.

This morning after Lily headed off to school and Matt headed off to work, I sat with my cup of coffee in my PJ’s with Jonah next to me and settled in for a 30 minute short on KONY2012.  I’m thinking… what is this campaign and why is it going to take 30 minutes. slightly annoyed.

Once I hit play, I could not stop. This is a movement charged and fueled by SOCIAL MEDIA. This is a movement that will find its end goal BECAUSE of the power of Social Media. I am touched, I am weepy and I am going to be part of this movement. This film has been viewed 26 million times since it was uploaded on Monday.

So WHAT is KONY 2012? Joseph KONY is the leader of the Ugandan rebel group – Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

What does he do?

“What he does is he takes children..from their parents and he gives them a gun to shoot… and he makes them shoot and kill other people”

“he is not fighting for any cause, just to maintain power”

through the years “he has had over 30,000 children in his army”

“The girls are used as Sex Slaves and the boys are a given guns to form the child army’

“They are forced to kill their parents and mutilate the faces of others”

These INVISIBLE CHILDREN have no voice..until NOW!

This film has been 10 years in the making, This movement has been 10 years in the making. And because and PRIMARILY because of social media we can STOP this man! The goal is to make Joseph KONY so famous that he can be arrested and caught. The goal is to have every person across the globe to know his face so he can be found.

This movement had been recieving a ton of negative and positive responses. So i encourage you to read THIS and a response from INVISIBLE CHILDREN.

My effort in this is Social Media coverage. Before you give to ANY organization… always do your homework. Some critics have called this movement SLACKTIVISM… because of the low effort of enagaement needed. But this is social media isn’t it? Your klout spreads the word! Why work harder when you can work smarter? If you do choose to get involved on other levels then you should! I think the point of the campaign is to bring awareness…and I say it has!

I encourage you to watch this film today and share this message with all you know. Post this very article on your Facebook wall and tweet it to the masses. You can take my entire post here and just copy and paste if you choose… please get this message out. BE THE CHANGE and make a difference.

in 2012 – “The people of the world see each other… and can protect each other’

* I was not paid for this. I am moved and charged and am in awe of the power of social media and the human good it is doing!”
