STRONG LIKE MOM

#StronglikeMom
Guess what we found at Target yesterday! These super cute shirts that read… STRONG LIKE MOM.

I am SUCH a fan of the new Cat and Jack line at Target. The clothes are totally on trend for kids with great graphic tees. I grabbed one of these shirts for Thomas this past week and he wore it to school today! When he asked what was written on his shirt, i said – STRONG LIKE MOM. And he immediately showed me his strong muscles… like mom!

The Strong Like Mom phrase is significant because it has an empowering message. Words have power and attaching words like strong to women changes the overall social dialogue about women and girls. I don’t want to get into any gender specific debates but I do appreciate this word ” STRONG” when used to describe us… moms!

Usually I see words like  sweet and beautiful and pretty when referring to campy phrases about Moms. While words like “strong” are saved for the Dads. These words are so important, especially these days where the sexist divide is so deep.

Thomas thinks I’m the strongest person he’s ever met. We call ourselves ‘The Fast Guys”…. we break all the rules! He has even changed the words to “Bob the Builder’ to sing – ‘Mommy, Mommy, can she fix it. Mommy, Mommy yes she can’ !

This is awesome!!!  Go grab yours at Target before they are gone!!

#LoveYourHair with Dove

#LoveYourHair
#LoveYourHair

As Lily gets older, parenting takes on a new strategy. Instead of slaying dragons and knock-knock jokes, we are now handling mood swings, cell phones privileges and navigating social lives. One thing that I have enjoyed with the tween-dom is getting my hair done. Lily is really into discovering new ways of braiding hair or curling it and I am only too happy to be her ever ready hair model.

Lily is in middle school and any parent of a child in middle school will tell you that these years are full of navigating social norms, mood swings and how one looks! I try to encourage positive body image and hair image any way I can and one of the most simplest and effective ways is through words. I encourage Lily to let her hair just flow naturally. She has thick brown hair that straightens out really well and holds a great curl so her hair issues are nowhere near as major as my curly frizzy hair!

Hair can be a pretty defining part of our overall image. While I never thought much about my hair, except the occasional complaint about frizz, it wasn’t until my pregnancy that I realized the impact my hair had on my overall identity.

My long thick black hair lost most of its volume during pregnancy and it wasn’t until almost 3 years later that it started to grow back to its full thickness.  The hair came back in full force…along with a few straggly greys that stick straight up from my scalp. I mean… not fun!

Lily and I both share the same adventurous spirit and our hair certainly reflects that… and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am excited to be part of Dove’s #LoveYourHair campaign to celebrate all types of hair. What do you love about your hair? I encourage you… dear reader… to make your own 3 second video of you and your daughter and tell us why you Love Your Hair! Be sure to use #LoveYourHair and use this link to make your own quick snap! http://bit.ly/2gHGfgi

Colorful Cold Weather Must Haves.

Colorful Cold -Weather Must Haves

Who said that winter clothing has to be dark and gloomy? I’m sharing a few of my favorite Colorful Cold Weather Must Haves. While I do admit to my share of olive-green and black coats and boots, I also have some cheery colors to wake up the cold days of the season. A pop of color here and there not only cheers you up but also adds a bit of flare to your sad winter wardrobe! Who says fashion takes a break in the winter…not I! Let’s give our Winter fashion some color! These first three months of the year are pretty brutal here in New York with temps dropping down to the single digits and once you add the wind chill to this, it’s coooooold. While layering seems to be the best way to tackle the temps, a few good cold weather pieces are always a good idea. Each of these picks are tried and true to keep your face from turning blue! ( droppin rhymes) .

#GetCrackin with Wonderful Pistachios

Momtrends #getcrackinThis is it everyone.. the big countdown to large Christmas feasts and celebrating the New Year! A decadent dinner party is always a must during this time of year. Last week I attended a very swank event with Nicole and her team at MomTrends and the team from Wonderful Pistachio. What a treat it was to be surrounded by such great food bloggers and chefs making a full feast themed around pistachios.

*This is a sponsored post. Thanks for stopping by and hearing a little more about my sponsors. *

While I will be the FIRST to tell you that I am not the best cook, I do post my fair share of foodie finds throughout my travels. SO talking and eating food it right up my alley. I’ve never tried cooking with pistachios so I was in for a totally new experience. Adding a handful of chopped pistachios is such a seamless and easy addition!

We started off the evening with a quick knife demo to make sure we all knew the ins and outs of chopping onions.* fun fact * – did you know that the reason you cry when chopping onions is because the onion liquid is being released mainly due to your WRONG chopping technique! So a quick ‘ across the onion’ chop is what’s need to minimize the onion liquid. No more tears in the kitchen kids!

After the demo we all were invited to pick a cooking station we want to work on. The protein, the grains, the veg… or the one I choose.. the no cooking station. I made really delicious popcorn- chocolate- pistachio balls. for the win!

Momtrends #getcrackinWonderful Pistachio and Cherry Popcorn Balls

Old fashioned popcorn balls sparkle with the tart addition of dried cherries and tasty Wonderful Pistachios, while the brown sugar gives them a caramel-y flavor. These are sure to be a hit at any holiday gathering.

Prep: 8 minutes / Time to Table: 18 minutes / Makes: 20 balls about 2 ½ inches in diameter

  • 12 cups popcorn
  • 1 cup shelled Wonderful Pistachios Roasted & Salted, lightly chopped
  • 1 cup dried cherries or cranberries
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large roasting pan combine popcorn, dried cherries and Wonderful Pistachios, mixing thoroughly.
  3. In a medium saucepan combine syrup, sugar, butter and salt. Over medium heat bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue stirring and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and baking soda. Be careful as mixture will bubble up.
  4. Pour syrup mixture over popcorn and stir to coat well. Popcorn will still be warm from the syrup. To keep your hands clean slip them into two plastic bags and coat bags with cooking spray or butter.
  5. Working quickly, form popcorn mixture into balls about 2 ½ inches in diameter. Place on the parchment lined baking sheet to cool.

Spicy Roasted Squash with Wonderful Pistachios

Delicata and butternut squash are roasted together with warm spices and a bit of cayenne to heat things up. Crunchy Wonderful Pistachios and maple syrup are just the right additions for texture and sweetness. Garnished with pomegranate arils this dish is a celebration of flavors.

Prep: 18 minutes / Time to Table: 38 minutes / Serves: 8 (about 10 pieces of squash/person; about a cup/person)

  • 1 ½ pounds butternut squash (4 ½ cups prepped)
  • 2 ½ pounds delicata squash
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup shelled Wonderful Pistachios Roasted & Salted, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ¼ cup POM Wonderful pomegranate arils
  • 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line two baking sheets with aluminum foil.
  2. Peel and seed butternut squash. Cut in half lengthwise and slice into ½ inch thick pieces. Cut in half again for quarters.
  3. Cut delicata in half lengthwise and seed. Cut into ½ inch thick slices. Combine all the squash in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Sprinkle the cinnamon, allspice, cayenne and salt over the squash. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Melt the butter and stir into the olive oil. Drizzle over the spiced squash and mix thoroughly.
  6. Transfer the squash to the baking sheets, arranging in a single layer. Bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Stir and flip squash. Sprinkle with Wonderful Pistachios and drizzle with maple syrup. Bake another 5 to 7 minutes until pistachios are just toasted. Remove from the oven.
  8. Arrange on a serving platter and sprinkle pomegranate arils over the squash. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Wonderful Pistachios, Peach and Barley Salad

A fresh summer salad with the crunch of Wonderful Pistachios and delicious peaches.

Prep: 15 minutes / Time to Table: 1 hour a 5 minutes / Serves: 4

  • ⅔ cup pearled barley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 2 cups trimmed green beans
  • ¼ cup pistachio oil, or olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups baby arugula
  • 2 ripe peaches, sliced ¼-inch thick
  • ⅓ cup crumbled ricotta salata
  • ⅓ cup shelled Wonderful Pistachios Roasted & Salted, roughly chopped
  1. Bring 2 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Stir in barley, reduce to a simmer, and cover. Cook about 45 minutes, until barley is tender and water is absorbed. Remove from heat, and set aside 10 minutes. Add parsley, fluff barley with a fork and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, bring water to a boil in another saucepan; boil string beans about 5 minutes, until crisp and tender. Blanch in ice water and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk pistachio oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper; toss with arugula, string beans, and half the sliced peaches.
  4. Place greens mixture on individual plates. Top with a scoop of barley, remaining peaches, ricotta salata and pistachios. Season with additional salt and pepper if desired.

Happy feasting everyone!!!

Back to School Must Haves for Tweens

I know the rest of you have had your kids in school for the past few weeks…but those of us here in the NorthEast still have over a week to go. This year Lily… my sweet 10-year-old fashion opinion generator… has decided to chime in on my Back to School round-up.

As Lily is getting older, I have loved seeing an evolution in her style. Some day’s she relaxed, other times she fancy, and she certainly has an eye for spotting trends.  Lily isn’t really a follower of fashion she sorta blazes her own trail! ( says the proud mom)  A little fashion blogger in the making!

It’s important to let your child experiment with what they are wearing, it’s their way of figuring out who they are, what they like and what makes them feel comfortable. These items on our list have  all been hand-picked by… my tween fashionista …Lily. We all know 10-year-old – 5th graders are the pickiest of all sooooo for your Back to School shopping… I give you Lily’s personal // must – have // list! Back to School2015

Bugaboo Bee3 Van Gogh – Stroller Review

The New York MomLuxury stroller brand, Bugaboo just released the all new Special Edition – Bugaboo Van Gogh Bee3. This is one stunning stroller that was inspired by artist Vincent Van Goghs painting “Almond Blossom”.

Thomas and I headed to the American Museum of Natural History – to see the dinosaurs. We had to take the subway to the museum and the Bugaboo VanGogh was so easy to travel with. The fold is very convenient and I could carry Thomas on one arm, the stroller on the other while walking down the subway stairs. No problem.

The seat of the Bugaboo Bee3 Van Gogh is deep and can be pulled out and up for more of a sitting space as Thomas gets older. A generous canopy practically covers the entire seat while in full recline. This was especially helpful when Thomas napped while we strolled through Central Park.

The seat is also rear and forward facing which I love and the stroller totally tackles the cobble stones or bumpy sidewalks really well.

The only note I have is that you can’t access the storage basket as easily as you would want to. When Thomas was sitting in the forward facing mode, his legs were in the way of the storage basket and there is no way to access it from the back. But whatever… small price to pay for such a fab stroller.

For a full detailed review of this stroller, here’s the review I filmed for TTPM.com
