Fancy Hair Don’t Care!

You guys! I have extensions in ma haaair! Bamboo earrings, at least two pair… Secret Extensions

Last week I headed over to the Paul Labreque salon on the Upper East Side to get my hair did. Mama got a whole new look girls!

The invite said… Extensions! and while I was totally hesitant, i figured.. why not! I’m in!

But these were not woven in extensions, these were everyday, everygal, no fuss extensions!

Secret Extensions are temporary hair extensions which really bring the wow factor. As you can see from these before and after pics… it’s pretty fancy.

While extensions are not my cup of tea… I have no time for any sort of maintenance other than looking decent and running out the door or trying to mask the spit-up or drool or whatever nasty leftover thing lands on me from these kidlets… Secret Extensions was easy enough … even for me. and best part… it’s only $40 per strand.I used two hair pieces to layer and get an ombre effect.

Secret Extensions have an elastic headband which you just slip onto your head. A  minute of pulling your real hair through and primping is all your need to blend the Secret Extensions into your hair. This takes all of 1 minute! The hair is synthetic but high quality so it does hold a curl. To release the curl, simply lay it out for a few hours.

Secret Extensions

The big question is: since the hair isn’t woven in or attached with a comb or clips… DOES IT STAY IN?

Answer: Yes!  I wore it for an entire evening of playing in the playground, dinner, walks around Brooklyn eating ice cream… and it totally stayed on. BUT… when we started our silly dance party… the elastic started to slip. Maybe when you go to the club, you should add a few bobby pins to hold them in. But for a date night or just a regular ole Tuesday… this works! Think holiday dinner party or office party or night out with the girls. This is the easiest way to look fab and feel fancy at a great price!

Mom’s in town!

The new York Mom

my mom is in town because my brother is taking her to Italy for a week. How amazing. So she’s with us for an overnight in NY before fliying off tomorrow. It’s such a treat. The kids are so happy, I am so happy, and she is over the moon. I wish we lived closer to our families.

Thomas is such a sweet little man and just runs over and hugs and kisses him ” mimmy mimmy”. Lily hasn’t stopped talking about all her adventures and showing my mom all her new toys and everything and everything.

There is a whole new energy in this house when my mom is around and i wish it could just stay this way. No matter how old you get, it’s nice to know, you will always love the energy your mom brings to  your life.

Best Kept Cupcake Secret in New York City

billys bakery Billys bakery Billys Bakery photo 4photo (53)

While all of you are lining up around the corner at Magnolia Bakery or standing in line at 3am for a cronut, the rest of us are waltzing in and out of Billy’s Bakery over on 9th ave.

While Billy’s Bakery has it’s share of celeb followers and TV mentions and cult following, it always feels like it’s the bakery for New Yorker’s. Very rarely will you find a map yielding tourist stumble in trying to locate the specific confectionary concoction mentioned in so and so tv show or so and so mag.

My girlfriend Meryl found ourselves strolling down 9th ave one afternoon and just couldn’t pass up a fancy cupcake!

Billy’s Bakery is on 9th and 22nd street but don’t tell anyone!

Powered By Heels -Rockport Shoes Review

These past few weeks have been non stop. Since Lily has been back in school, our schedules seem to be filled to the brim with places to be, homework to do, bathtime, ballet, work, meetings and just life.

I know I’m not alone in this daily life grind with kids. Each day looks similar to one before and it’s exhausting! So what powers me to stay energized and inspired during the day-to-day?

Powered By Heels

I’m powered by this sweet unpredictable family of mine. Whether it’s a family member flying up to visit us for the weekend, Lily and her sweet poems which find their way into my purse, Thomas and all of his new- isms and Matt and his patience and love… I am powered by my family.

As a mother of two and working in the freelance creative space, I’m on the go. And I have to go from playing in the park to a meeting in downtown Manhattan in a snap.

The New York Mom

As part of Rockport Shoes #PoweredbyHeels campaign,  Rockport asked me to pick out a pair of shoes and instead of going to my standard boots or ankle boots, I choose the classic pump. These shoes have proven to be a go-to in my closet. Last week I had a full day of meetings and work and media events all over Manhattan and these pumps stayed on my feet all day. For a solid 13 hours. Girls, you know this is impressive right! Usually I have my clown show of switching shoes in the elevator as I’m arriving at meetings.

Not this time.

What made the Rockport Total Motion Pointed Toe Pump comfy was their built in ABS Heel which absorbs the impact of hard sidewalks, and the Adiprene by Adidas Sport Technology. You can read all about it here–> Total Motion Pointed Toe Pump.  The balls of the feet are also padded and of course the all important arch support made wearing this shoe for long periods of time comfortable. With the Adidas collabo…these heels are more like wearing sneaks than pumps! It’s a win for me!

My feet are wide from years of dancing so pumps are not really my go to shoes. Pointy Toe pumps always bunch my toes up and make it incredibly uncomfortable. The Rockport Pumps were different, the soft leather hugged, yet stretched with my feet to keep the support of my foot without the discomfort.

Strolling in Style with the Britax Affinity Stroller – Review + {Giveaway}

IMG_0259

So as you know narrowing down a stroller for your babe is a pretty daunting task. Don’t fret! I can help! I review strollers and baby gear for a living.. totally my world!

10387460_10204518606785647_3479337636816229862_n

Today we are discussing the Britax Affinity stroller… I have to say that of all the strollers we have in the garage right now.. and that’s about 8 brands… the Britax Affinity is Matt’s favorite. It’s portable, it’s easy to move around, it’s easy to travel with and it’s a smooth ride. Daddy approved you guys!

I was invited to the launch of the Britax Affinity stroller months ago and knew that this was a new fashionable direction for Britax. The Affinity is a higher price point than Britax’s other strollers, putting this in the luxury stroller market, this is noticeable from the first glance. The sleek, clean frame can be customized with 3 different frame colors and 6 color packs to choose. We choose the black frame with the deep blue color pack. I love this look.

10509489_10204157412036004_5418757157675359317_n

We’ve had this stroller all summer and it’s been our go to. We even took it on an airplane to florida. While it is heavier than an umbrella stroller, this was the perfect ride for Thomas. Our long days in florida out and about with our family… roaming the numerous outdoor malls was a bit exhausting for Little Man Thomas! This stroller and its soft padding and generous canopy and suspension wheels all made for a very cozy snooze. Also I have totally folded this stroller up while standing on the steps of the subway, put Thomas on my hip, diaper bag across my body and stroller on my other arm and walked up and down those steps. Totally fine. It’s not lightweight but it’s not heavy by any means.

So let’s get started with this stroller, There is so much to share, I’ll try to make it easy for you!

IMG_1095IMG_1076

  • The entire seat is rear or forward facing. Having a rear facing seat option when baby is in those first months is so essential to bonding. Thomas used to just look at me and laugh and smile the entire time I was strolling him around. Even these days, I put his rear facing when I’m trying to get him to nap.IMG_1091
  • Click n Go built-in adapter system works with BRITAX CHAPERONE and B-SAFE infant car seats and bassinet. But a travel system which is sold separately  can be used with most infant car seats.

photo (52)

  • The back tires are air-filled pneumatic tires and the front have an adjustable suspension. So basically a pretty smooth ride.
  • A nice generous storage basket allows for storing whatever you need for the day.
  • The brakes are one of my favorite features. No more scuffing your shoes with this system. Just a tap of the foot either to stop or release the stroller works!
  • The adjustable footrest has been really great to give Thomas a comfy seat with no more dangling legs.

IMG_1080

  • The leather-like trim that goes across the handle bar and the bar which goes across the seat is a nice luxury touch which definitely stands out.

photo (50)

  • There is a viewing flap on the canopy. Now I found this to be very small compared to other strollers with canopy flaps. Also the glare off the material is too much most times so you can’t really see your babe.
  • But a mesh zippered opening allows for lots of ventilation and has proven essential to us during our long days at the Bronx Zoo.

photo (51)

  • Did I mention that the canopy is very generous, The babe is totally covered under there.
  • The fancy leather trim like handle bars move up and down and the handle articulates front to back to fit all heights. even shorties like me.
  • A 5 point seat harness, seat recline and roomy seat interior all make it a comfy cozy cocoon for the babe!
  • Also washing the insert is easy peasy!photo (53)

Alright so there ya have it. I like the Britax Affinity. I think it’s a ton of bang for your buck . It has fashion, function, comfort and longevity.

THERE’S MORE… If you are interested in purchasing this stroller I have the BEST deal for you!

Keeping your hair color in with Nexxus Color Assure System – review

Nexxus Assure* This post is sponsored by Conde Nast*

After Thomas was born a whole farm of grey hairs started cultivating on my head. All in the front too. These grey are more like a silver because when they catch the sunlight they shine sooo pretty and remind my of my daily aging! Eck. not a good look.

The New York Mom

I used an at home dye to tackle my greys and have been using the Nexxus Color Assure Pre Wash primer along with the entire Nexxus Color Assure System for about 2 weeks.

Here’s what – I wash my hair every other day-ish. so in those two weeks ( 15 days) I’ve washed my hair about 6 times using all 4 of the Color Assure System products. My hair felt awesome, soft and fluffy and smelled great, the hair color held but It was grey hairs and not a whole head. Not sure how different that is. I will say this though, I used all 4 products in the System – Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Conditioner and Color Assure Glossing Tonic and the end result has been great!

Nexxus Color

So this stuff works like this:

The NEW Nexxus Color Assure System is the first oil-infused color care system by Nexxus, and it provides 2X longer color protection* Look for the Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Conditioner and Color Assure Glossing Tonic in mass retailers, select drugstores and supermarkets nationwide.

The NEW Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer is a pre-treatment to shield hair in the shower. It helps to repel water, so color stays longer and more vibrant. The Pre-Wash Primer is sulfate-free and infused with a blend of clear oils, including almond, coconut and argan oil. Almond oil is known to lock in moisture, nourish hair and reduce breakage. Coconut oil is known to provide softness and elasticity. Argan oil is known to improve shine and vibrancy. White Orchid Extract is known to provide moisture and works to seal and protect hair by repelling water and keep it from entering the core.

If you are looking for something to try for your post baby grays.. I would totally give the Nexxus Color Assure System a try!

The Place Restaurant – Classic New England Must!

Matt and I are love food and this summer we had our fill of every sort of permeation of seafood there is to have in the northeast. If you like venturing outside of NYC on the weekends, I have found a pretty perfect seafood spot for you!

Last weekend on one of our jaunts up to Connecticut, we stopped at a classic restaurant – The Place.

The new York Mom

The Place Guilford, CT photo (45)

The Place is located in Guilford,CT and is a MUST for anyone who lives in the tri state area. This unique restaurant has outdoor fire-pits which cook up basic… really great fresh seafood. Sitting on tree stumps, we enjoyed steamers, corn on the cob, lobster, and their special grilled clams. Everything is low-key, with just the basic seasonings… and pretty perfect. Since The Place is BYOB – there were people sipping wine from crystal glasses to the plastic cups we brought along. Even though The Place is on a busy road, once you drive into the dirt parking lot and grab a seat, the canopy of the trees and the ambiance all totally make you fee as if you were out in the woods of CT someplace.

Few things to note: This is cash only and the menu is really limited. So if you are a picky eater who orders cobb salads or chicken sandwiches at seafood restaurants. don’t go here! But if you love good seafood… you MUST go here!

Before the weather gets too cold, I hope you can get yourself to The Place Restaurant in Guilford, CT

My 9 Year Olds Homework is driving me crazy!

Every evening, there is a quiet unheard cry from parents who are losing their minds over their child’s homework.

I am one of them.

We, the media, discuss the hardships of having a baby, the challenges of life with a toddler, the troublesome teenage years but we sort of skip over these pre-tweens who are going through something pretty major on a daily basis and homework is only the smallest part of their struggle.photo (47)

Lily is a smart child, top of her class. Her homework is not an overload by any means. It’s exactly what I would expect. It’s a reinforcement of what was studied in class that day.

For my 9YO, her daily homework is my hell. Whether she is exhausted from the pressure of being in 4th grade, the social pressure of school, the pressure to study and learn at warp speed or just being a 9 Year Old with lots of changes going on… our daily homework routine is my hell!

The cries start almost immediately and won’t stop for about 3 hours. which is how long her 40 minutes of homework takes.

As a parent of a 9YO I want to tell all of you coming up the parenting pipeline. Get ready for it. If you thought homework was bad when YOU were a student… it’s HORRID when you are a parent.

After we try to soothe her cries, she finally settles into a rhythm and gets it done but the meltdown takes a good chunk of our evening. It’s stressful, it’s exhausting and it’s isolating.

Isolating because – no one talks about it. Maybe there is a ‘my child does homework better than your child’ check list, which I am not aware of. Or maybe parents don’t want to discuss their struggles with their pre tweens so openly. I don’t know. But would you people PLEASE talk about this because I feel like I am going through it all alone and my child is the only one having full meltdowns every. single. night.

Lily is an A student, her grades are A’s, she gets her stuff done but this homework is killing her. Her teacher is great and while she does lay down the law and makes sure her students all know what is expected of the curriculum… Lily is stressed and there is A LOT to learn this 4th grade year. The pressure is on!

My heart breaks seeing her cry like this. I don’t want to say she struggles through homework, but she is so stressed to get it done and get it done right that it’s almost too much for her little mind and body to take.

What do we do parents? How do you handle this? Do you have any tips you can share with me, because I am emotionally drained every single night.

Potty Time

Thomas turned 21 months this past week… can you believe that!

We are maybe inching toward the potty training stage. A few months ago we put a little kiddie potty in the bathroom and have just left it there. Thomas sometimes runs and sits on the potty and does the deed and then gets up and says i poo poo. And sure enough a little something is there… in his diaper.

The new York Mom

He doesn’t like to sit on the potty without his diaper and because I’m home with him so much. i don’t push him.  A friend of mine has her child potty trained at 18 months! because of day care requirements. I’m following the whole – when they are ready– technique.

When did you start potty training with your child ?

Thomas is using the Prince Lionheart Potty Pod. This is a small, compact portable potty. The color and simple design  fit the decor of our bathroom with a nod to the wee little MOTO in the home. You can also take the inside compartment out to wash it out…etc. The seat of this potty is  plastic which is ok but Prince LionHeart makes a potty with a foam cushioned seat, which might be a little softer for tushies. Stop by PRINCE LIONHEART for lots of cute baby and toddler stuff.

I’m sure I’ll have many more potty stories coming up!
