Tween Style File with SAKS Off 5th

Tween Style File tween_Style_File

Welcome to another Tween Style File –

One of our favorite places to shop for Lily is at the SAKS Off 5th store. Off Fifth is the ‘outlet” for Saks Fifth Avenue. The prices for kids clothes are tremendous. You can buy some of the top lines for a fraction of what it will cost you at other stores. Lily has a very coveted wardrobe and I can’t wait until she gets older so I can ‘borrow” some of her duds.

This spring dress keeps with the high-low trend we are still seeing this spring, paired with a denim jacket and gold sandals, this dress is age appropriate and can go from church to picnic.

Lily looks so grow up and like such a sweet little lady! But don’t let her fool you for one second! She was still hunting down frogs and jumping over grates all over NYC as we strolled around on a lazy saturday!

High Tea with Julie Andrews and the Very Fairy Princess

Recently I was invited to high tea with Julie Andrews. Let me repeat that… high tea with JULIE ANDREWS!

-i’m going to let that sink in-

Julie Andrews is such a part of my childhood, her films truly transported you to far off lands where song and dance and suspense and dancing penguins were all part of the everyday routine.

Julie Andrews is also a New York Times Best Selling author and has been penning children’s books for over 40 years. The tea I was invited to was for the release of her latest book – The Very Fairy Princess – Graduation Girl. The Very Fairy Princess is a children’s book series Ms. Andrews has written with her daughter ,Emma Walton Hamilton. There are several books in the series and this one follows the lead character – Geraldine – as she celebrates the end of school. While taking down her art work and cleaning out her cubby and saying goodbye to her dear teacher Mrs. Pim, Geraldine starts to get nervous about the new teacher next year.

The Very Fair PrincessThe very fairy princess

Julie Andrews described the character of Geraldine as Eloise meets Hilary Clinton. How fitting! Geraldine’s character is inspired by Julie Andrews granddaughter Hope age 10. Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma,  who co-authored the book, wanted to created a series which empowered girls. Even though Geraldine is wearing pink and tutus she has an inner sparkle and strength which comes through the stories.

Geraldine is much like my own Lilypie. Scrapped knees, rescuing frogs – who don’t really need to be rescued and climbing trees and singing to the fairies. Lily is very much this girl who wears tutus and frilly things while climbing trees and walking through mud puddles. My kinda girl! Lily and I have loved reading this whole series. I think Lily really finds points which relate to her. Anxiety about a new teacher, end of school year, making friends …etc.

So what’s coming up? I have to super scoop and it’s sooo good!

The next book in the series has a Halloween Theme and guess… just guess what Geraldine and her friend dress up as.

Geraldine is LADY MARY and her best friend is LADY CYBIL …from downtown abbey!! I mean how brilliant!

There is also a doodle book and ” i can read” books in the works.

Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma have such a special bond. She had some advice for parents to create strong bonds with their kids.

  • Read to your children often
  • Write stories together
  • Go on endless adventures in the garden and make up stories
  • Spend time with your kids… the dishes can wait.

I absolutely loved meeting Julie Andrews she was such a gem and I was really fortunate to be at this very small gathering of media.

Life as seen through my iphone5

It’s Almost the end of the school year. We have one month left before summer vacation starts! This life of mine goes by so fast and most days it just seems like a blur. I love living in the age of iphones and smart devices which capture your life at exactly the speed which it happens around you. I hope Lily and Thomas will appreciate the documentation of their daily world as seen through my eyes. I know I take a ton of pictures but these subjects are so rich for my lens to capture.

Thomas waits for Lily to come home from school everyday by the door. He wakes from his nap right around the time she comes home and I love photographing him and Jonah in their sleepy state. I’ve been working more lately, picked up a few clients and this little blog is offering up some collabo opportunities and so i’ve been out of the house which has been amazing for my brain and my sanity. It makes coming home to these babes that much meaningful. The_New_York_Mom The_New_York_Mom

Spring has been just a delight here in New York. I love all the seasons and spring did not disappoint this year. We dance in the blossoms of the shedding trees on our daily walk through the park. Lily has been riding her new bike a lot and her art pieces were selected for special display at school. She’s a one of kind gal. And she is going to change the world… just you watch.

Thomas and Jonah continue to build their bond and don’t really leave each others side. While they do compete for my attention on the daily, the two of them are just the sweetest little boys you will ever come across. Jonah is so patient as Thomas climbs on his back and asks for horsey rides, or wants to play with his big sharp teeth or even wants to squeeze in for a good snuggle.

This life of mine is blessed beyond what I ever imagined. These kids keep me inspired and renewing myself. While I do have my days of – i should be doing more– these images are perfect reminders of the valuable work that I AM doing at home. Raising little humans!

Our beach days

One of the perks of moving out to the burbs in Long Island is being so very close to the beaches. We are a quick 30 mins from midtown Manhattan and a quick drive out to the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean. Our beach of choice – Long Beach/Atlantic Beach.

IMG_1846  IMG_1857  IMG_1868

We’ve been enjoying these beaches all to ourselves this spring and after this Memorial Day Weekend, it’s going to be packed with summer beach goers. I do hope they care for our beach like we do. We’ve enjoyed endless hours of strolling on the beach, collecting seashells, jogging on the boardwalk and just being by the ocean.

We don’t really go to the beach when the sun is high and usually head over around 5pm and stay through sunset. The boardwalk at Long Beach is always a treat. There are volley ball tournaments, bikers, runners, music, food trucks… so much that happens on that boardwalk. But I love the quiet months. I love when it’s just us and the waves. I love when there are no footprints on the sand. The beach is my place of calm. You know when you go someplace and every fiber in our body just relaxes. The ocean does that to me. We spend endless hours flying our kites and playing in the sand. I don’t even have to get into the water… i just love the energy of the water. I guess for 3 months… we can share our beaches with the world.

Evenings on Long Beach are pretty special – the surfers are out catching waves, the fisherman have their lines out and sometimes they catch a shark and Lily loves to touch their rough skin, and the locals comes out to enjoy the quiet sunsets. These two babes of mine have inherited my love for the ocean and it’s been rewarding to see both of them get energized from the salty air.

Happy Summer everyone… if you find yourself on the gorgeous beaches of Long Island, drop me a note!

Boden – the british fashion brand – is one of my favorite and most anticipated previews every season. I love their clothes, their patterns, their mix of vintage and modern and overall quality of the pieces. Boden is clothing with personality. Last week I was invited to the Fall 2014 preview and I have fallen in love with all their pieces. From colorful sweaters to tweed coats and shiny jeweled shoes, Boden’s fall line is not to be missed. Boden offers fashion for Men, Women kids. Their Mini – Boden line is really cute and we have several pieces for both Lily and Thomas.

The fall line is inspired by London, England. It mixes lines and concepts from architecture, color, pattern combos, a bit of whimsy with some modern lines thrown in. I love the cuts of the dresses, the coats are to die for and did I mention the shoes!

Here’s a peek of what you can expect from BODEN Fall 2014.

Alex Toys Sound and Play Busy Table – REVIEW

Our focus on play is more on the hands on than the tech. While I work in the tech world, I am not crazy about introducing tech to kids at a very young age. We love hands on play, musical play, creative play. I love exposing my kids to open-ended storytelling. Things which inspire the mind and help create stories and play.

Thomas has been playing with the Alex Toys Sound and Play Busy Table. We have lots of play tables and I have to say this is one of my faves. The colors, the creative interaction, the musical component… it has it all. It’s a great value for around $80.  This is a creative, wooden toy which is great to get those little hands working and those minds thinking. This toy works on fine motor skills, engages sensory development and is just plain ole creative fun.

Thomas takes some of his trains and choo choo’s them around the busy table. There are peek a boo wooden flap, a bead maze, crazy wheels, a zylophone and a drum and more. The ABC’s are all around the perimeter which also a great learning component.  We’ve been enjoying this busy table. It’s certainly keeps Thomas tinkering on one thing or another over in his play space!

Please swing by ALEX TOYS to find out more!

* I was sent a Sound and Play Busy Table for purposes of this review. All opinions are my own*

Captured moments

My friend posted a beautiful poem which hangs prominently in her home. Some of the phrases just haven’t left my mind and often times I find myself reflecting on these words. We’ve had a great few weeks and I just wanted to catch and bottle up these sweet moments. This poem is beautiful and I do hope you take a moment to read it all the way through.

Our roles as parents are most often times overlooked and under-appreciated. This line sort of makes you realize your worth and your importance and the pure responsibility of what it means to be a parent.  – You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.

The Prophet – Khalil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
– Khalil Gibran

Mothers Day on Mothers Day

We decided to  stop by the Bronx Zoo on a whim and got caught in the torrential rain – while we were on the wild asia monorail – which is outdoors and uncovered, so we couldn’t really escape. Lily was getting dumped on since all the water would pile up above her seat and then every time the monorail took a turn, it would just dump on her! But it was such fun. When was the last time you were caught in the rain. Thomas found the whole situation totally entertaining. once the ride was over, it was still pouring down rain, and we ran to the nearest shelter which really didn’t help much. So we stood there for an additional 15 minutes… soaking wet!

photo (34)

Earlier that day we spent the morning strolling under the gorgeous cherry blossoms on the Hudson River, a decadent brunch at one of my favorite restaurants in Westchester, we bought Lily a new bike and finally around 7pm we made it home… soaked and happy and loved. There were flowers and drawings and notes and phone calls with our moms… it was an awesome weekend.

I love being a mother. Just watching these kids grow everyday. Doing new things, pretend crying just to get a hug from me (  which I would give them hugs all day everyday but sometimes a pretend cry hug seems to be what they need), kissing boo boos and slaying dragons all part of a day’s work.

There are days when I feel like the whole world is crashing down on my head, the kitchen is a disaster, the laundry is overflowing, the poopy diapers have taken over the nursery and the 9 YO hormones have defeated me…. and the kids are too much to take and if I could JUST make it to bedtime then all will be well.

But then there are glorious moments when we all get caught in the rain and instead of the world crashing down we hike up out skirts and dance in the rain. This family of mine… what a blessing!

A few pictures from our weekend!

Lily took this picture of Thomas while he was scaling the big kid playground.

Google Glass Mothers Day Video will have you in tears!

Google Glass just released an ad/video that tugs on your heartstrings like no other. The video was shot entirely with google glass and follows a man – a son-  traveling from the US to India to see his mom. SEEDS  was created by the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts as part of the Glass Creative Collective.

I’m telling you now… get the tissues out!

There are so many reasons this appeals to me. I’m from India. I love seeing the colors, the head shakes, the cultural references, the journey, the food, the ambiance, the colors, the flight to india,  the reactions… all of it. This is a very sweet video and I hope you take a second to watch it.

Happy Mothers Day!
