Friday Recap – 5 Things

1. It’s time to PRANCERCISE!!! This video has been making the rounds on the internets over here. It reminds of one of my favorite dance professors in college…she made us pranced across the floor in Modern Dance Class all the time. Ah good times! Watch this video you guys… it’s awesome. My professional tip for you – I don’t like using ankle weights when you walk or run… it screws with your alignment and it’s no bueno for the all around structure of your body. Use ankle weights to do some leg lifts to strengthen that REALLY important muscle right above your knee. Ok Enough Talking and let’s start walking!”

2. *LISTEN UP* It’s the last few weeks of crawfish season so get em while they are plump. We headed over to one of our favorite cajun restaurants today to get 3 LBS of cajun crawfish… Matt made some corn and biscuits and organic Trader Joe’s lemonade…and that was that! It was our family HELLO to summer!  happy summer all! * my tip* eat crawfish, crabs, peel shrimp..etc on newspaper. clean up is a breeze.

3. I’ve been seeing some seriously stunning pics in my social outlets… all coming from the MOMA Rain Room. So get thee to the MOMA stat! I have to say I love this ‘trend’ of interactive audience participation art installations that are going around in NYC these days. It’s nothing new. Downtown artists have been doing this for YEARS… but since these massive installations are being housed in major art institutions like the MOMA and the Armory…and the value of blasting a ‘really cool’ pic on your social media outlets builds your klout… everyday peeps who would otherwise NEVER EVER go see an art installation are now lining up around the block. It’s great… but I would love to chat with anyone who wants to engage in a discussion about the attraction for  mass appeal of art installations and if this affects the artists creative process before and after and what and the pros and cons of it. My opinion! ( got a little art heavy there for a hot second… i could go on for days!)

4. Farmers Markets are in FULL swing! So go support your local farmer and eat fresh farm produce. The spring- early summer season is one of my favorite food seasons… so go get inspired at the farmers market.

5. It’s been a rough few weeks for me. Being home all the time, no one to talk to, baby not sleeping, I’m not sleeping, bad hair days because of rain, rain for days… have all contributed to my diminishing chirpy mood lately. So my advice to you this week… go check in on a friend who has had a baby recently. They are MUCH lonelier than you would ever imagine. I am so thankful to have friends who call to check in on me. and If you want to see said people.. how about showing up at their home for some social time instead of asking them to pack a stroller, the baby, the other kid, the diapers, the kitchen sink to meet you and your no kid having self at a convenient location for you.  Just my PSA to support the ladies with babies out there!

Summer Travel Beauty Must Haves with Elizabeth Arden

You know the beauty brand – Elizabeth Arden.. the red doors… the spa… the mini capsules that hold the fountain of youth… maybe your mom used it? Mine did.

Elizabeth Arden Logo

I was invited to a pretty fab event earlier this month – BLOG MEETS BRAND- more on this later. At this event I was asked to get a makeover and test out a handful of Elizabeth Arden goodies.

Listen I am a glutton for beauty products and they DID say makeover.. so it was a win! These days between poopy blowout diapers that creep up through the NECK… I mean the NECK people. how does poop travel up the back and out the neck in a 5 month old?

I digress.

What I’m trying to say is… Mama needed a makeover and some beauty treats.

Alright, so I started with a beauty makeover at the Elizabeth Arden counter and the make up artist was the deal. I’m a snob when it comes to makeup artists – in my experience of being on broadway, off-broadway, commercials, music videos, stage and film, I have met their share of all kinds of make up artists.

I know my skin, I know my shade… I know what my makeup is supposed to do for me.

The makeup artist was fab. She matched my skin color SPOT ON! I have olive AND warm tones …this is NOT easy to match and often times I have to mix some potion to create my shade… but Elizabeth Arden did it… matched my shade, found a blush that matched, flawless finish and beautiful color…GASP! Good stuff.

Next – skincare.

I was given a generous supply of the Ceremide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum.

20130529-230349.jpgAlright so when I got home I tried this… it’s packed to the brim with hydration stuff. Ceramides comprise 50% of the essential lipids found in the skin and are essential in maintaining defense against sign of aging. You just pop the capsule and a super generous amount of serum comes out. I use is on my face and neck and decolletage! * first time I have EVER used that word* say wha!

I have been using it as a primer and this summer when we head off on our many travels… I think it would be a great addition to my beauty stash. It makes your skin look so great without makeup… might be my airplane look. Watch out!

I was also given a generous supply of Eight Hour Skin Protectant

20130529-230422.jpgThis stuff is pretty great. It was created by Elizabeth Arden herself back in 1930 and the formula has NEVER changed. So you know it’s a good potion. You can use this on your chapped hands, lips, elbows… all of it. It’s a thick vaseline type consistency and so far… i dig it. Easy to toss in your travel bag and head out to the beach!

I was also given a handful of colors in the Beautiful Color Luminous Lip Gloss 20130529-230401.jpg

All I have to say is My lip gloss is cool… my lip gloss be poppin. Yes. Great consistency, and stays for a bit also offers high-shine, increased moisture with Mango and Shea Butters with a light vanilla scent. I have been wearing these alone AND with a lip liner and blending it in. There is a mirror on the side of the lipgloss case and this makes it easy for those sailing trips or park trips or beach trips when you have to look all editorial for a hot second! But really… chasing around kidlets in this luxurious lip gloss works too.

So there ya have it. Elizabeth Arden products have found their way into my travel beauty stash this season. I would never..ever… have tried this brand if it wasn’t for this sponsored post.

But honestly –

  • The makeup stayed for about 6 hours and held up to drinks, lights and NY crazy weather.
  • The potions and lotions feel very hydrating… which is key in these coming summer months.

Give it a try!

This summer, while you are packing your travel bags don’t forget to toss in a few   Summer Beauty Products From ElizabethArden.

Life as captured via my iPhone

This life of ours never stops. I guess that’s the good part right. We’ve been keeping ourselves busy with Lily’s showings at school – where her teachers spoke so highly of her and her creativity. We’ve been redecorating… and what better way to do a quick fix than IKEA, Daily home shenanigans lead by Matt… don’t let his cute fool you. He’s the grand master of daily shenanigans.

What would I ever do with out my iphone!

Over the long weekend

Oh you guys… the long glorious weekend is over.

20130528-012145.jpgWe had such a relaxing few days. Even though it rained for most of the weekend… that did not damper our spirits. 20130528-011826.jpg

On saturday we met up with my siblings for a decadent dinner in Tribeca. Lots of wine and martinis and super yummy decadent food later… we headed to my sis’ apartment and ate macaroons and played video games.. yes video games… like we were 13… because we love our video games and anything where a car goes fast in a circle always seems to make its way into our hangouts. 20130528-011834.jpg

Lily spent the night at my brother’s house. This is SUCH a highlight for her and to me… it’s such a blessing that we all live so close by when lily is at this age of truly enjoying time spent with her aunts and uncles. In the past we have had a couple rocky over nighters.. there was the time she cried all night, then the time my brother and sis in law had to put her in a car at 3am and drive around to get her to fall asleep, there was that other time when Lily wasn’t sleeping and my brother turned on a discovery channel show called – CATS” it started out with cute cuddly cats and he fell asleep while she watched a lion attack another animal… etc. But this time.. lily was a few months older and fell asleep snuggled up just fine. Didn’t even call us to say good night *salty tear*

The lilacs are in full bloom.

20130528-012004.jpgAnd when you open the windows the sweet fragrance just floods your senses and all the corners of the house!

A cookout with our family was the perfect thing for a lazy Sunday. 20130528-011937.jpg

Monday morning we woke up and headed over to our town Memorial Day Parade.

I love a parade… especially a small town one.

20130528-011956.jpgI know people put lots of ‘oohs and aahs’ toward the big NYC parades… but really there is nothing like a small town parade with people you know marching in it.

And i am SUCH a sucka for marching bands… like back in the day.

You know Matt and I met in High School Marching band right. yep we did. I was in the colorguard and he played trumpet. What a sweet young romance we had! and still do!

I loved Marching Band… have the best memories of my high school days! I was in the colorguard… and winterguard.. and we were good.. like – medaled at WGI-good.  I spun flags, rifles and my forte… sabre. Go SABRES!!

We walked back home from the parade and I made Lily’s favorite brunch.

20130528-012208.jpg Pancakes and eggs and bacon.. she can eat some bacon now! and Jonah loves bacon too… I always make a little extra for him. {don’t tell matt}.20130528-011922.jpg

Summer is in FULL swing here in New York… remember that Paul Simon song – Kodachrome..give the greens of summer… makes you think all the worlds a sunny day..oh yea. 20130528-011947.jpg

You HAVE to go to the beach on memorial day… i mean it’s the beginning of summer you know… unofficially. 20130528-012030.jpg

Lily is a beach baby just like me. She just comes to life when she’s at the beach and ran circles around us for a good 20 minutes. 20130528-012038.jpg

It was FREEEEZING at the beach yesterday. Freezing like the inside of my ear was hurting from the cold. But we stuck it out for a little bit. 20130528-012047.jpg

Lily , of course, wanted to jump into the water and head out for a swim… I was the mamabear voice of reason. She only has 5 more weeks of school and I just don’t want her getting sick so late in the year 20130528-012056.jpg

The beaches out here in New York are gorgeous… the waves alone are impressive.  We saw a few fishermen fishing off the beach… last time they caught a baby shark and Lily was soo impressed. I haven’t told her that sharks sometimes are in 3Feet of beach water. Yikes! we’ll just keep that to ourselves umkay. 20130528-012108.jpg

If only all our days were this carefree right. Water for days and nothing but sand in your toes and salty beach air running though your hair. 20130528-012116.jpg

Ah summer… you are finally here! It’s time for watermelon and mint julips and lazy summer nights! Woop!20130528-012134.jpgHappy Summer everyone. Hope you find a few moments where the scent of lilacs fills your senses and you catch a few sunsets and love on a sweet someone!

So there is this thing online called Throwback Thursday and it’s just been such fun to see people’s pics from their lives before kids or from a different stage in their life. So i thought maybe I’ll jump in as well.

Maria Colaco

My throwback this Thursday is to some of my dance pics. Gosh I love dancing. And I love the creative process. Now I’m NOT talking about dance – So you think you can dance- style… I’m talking about really art and dance and movement that means something and not just for ooohs and aaahs… the really heart of movement ya know.

Maria Colaco

So here ya go… this was me just a couple years ago.

Maria Colaco

What’s your throwback?

Mondays in this house…

What did you do on Monday?

We did a whole lotta ‘making faces in the mirror’ business.

Jonah sometimes feels bad that the MOTO has taken over his spot on my lap. So after I put everyone to bed and plop down on the couch to watch TV at night.. Jonah finds me and reclaims his place on my lap… or on my head… as long as he can be near me. What a sweet beast!

Most days I sit in front of this mirror and stretch and chat with Thom. He loves seeing his reflection. I can’t believe how fast the time is flying by. make it stop!

Flatout Flatbread – Review

It’s better than sliced bread… no really it is!

// I’m working with MtoMconsulting and Walmart and Flatout Flatbread to bring you this post.\

It’s as if the blogging universe heard about me and my no cooking skills ways and decided to throw me a bone… or some flat bread!

This is the simplest yet YUMMIEST way to make a fab meal for your family, your friends… or solo. So listen up!

It’s so easy… my 8YO “cooker girl” Lily made us dinner tonight. { I supervised the knife and stove and oven parts}

I headed to Walmart – because I was compensated via Walmart to purchase my items, but you can also find it at other STORES – so I headed to Walmart with Lily to pick up our ingredients onions, peppers, sausage and cheese. We also bought ice cream and spinach and strawberries to go with our meal and the spinach never made it out but the ice cream and strawberries were oh so yum so whatever!

Look what we made! Flatout Flatbread Pizza!

So basically here’s what you do –

Heat the oven to 350-degrees. when heated, place the flat bread on the grill or on a baking sheet and place in oven for 2 mins… just to pre heat the bread.

Layer the Flatout Flatbread with all your favorite COOKED ingredients and pop it back in the oven for 4 mins …BAZZAM!

Done you guys. That’s it. no joke.. done and done!

flatout -flatbread.jpg

I mean..I’m inviting people over and going to experiment with my flatbread… think anchovies, clams, oysters… listen… it’s THAT easy. {And i’m feeling the summer seafood thing!}

This is what we did today – Carmelized Onions, Fully Cooked smoked sausage that I sliced and sautéed on the stove, sautéed peppers, Parmesan and Mozzarella blend cheese.

Lily drizzled some truffle oil… it’s her favorite oil… but you can use olive oil in case YOUR 8-year-old foodie has run out of truffle oil

So Lily drizzled truffle oil – then layered with the cheese blend – smiley faced peppers – and then the onions and sausage – final cheese layer. She made two “pizzas” for us. One with onions and one without.

This is so easy and the flatbread comes in different flavors! We picked the Spicy Italian.

There is also a really fun Flatout Flatbread “Taste of Chicago” Giveaway going on. Enter —> here!–> a Rafflecopter giveaway

Food, Music and Big Gay Ice Cream

Be still my foodies heart! We headed over to the Great Googa Mooga fest over the weekend. {A food & music fest in Brooklyn with all of my favorite food trucks!} It was a bit overcast and a few raindrops here and there but overall it was a great time had by all of us… mainly Lily Pie. Her day was full of adventurous food, people behaving strangely, music and knights and centaurs… yes .. i said knights and centaurs!

read on…20130518-231425.jpg

First stop – American Express Serve Kick Back lounge.

20130518-232102.jpgThe soul rebels were playing and Lily found herself right at home with the arts and crafts provided for kids.

20130518-232230.jpgThom and i made ourselves comfortable in the grass and danced around to the amazing New Orleans brass band. Matt headed off to find beer and food.

First up Lobster – can’t remember where Matt picked it up from- but it was gooood.

Next we had Snail and rabbit paella… Let me tell you.. it was delicious! The paella was cooked just right will all the flavors completely infused in every ingredient… the rice.. perfectly paella-ish! and the rabbit and snail pieces were chopped just right so you never got a piece too big or too small.

Lily walked around with us to find something just for her… and she picked the BACON platter… that’s my girl. smoked grilled bacon with pickles on the side.

There are food tents all over and you just have to wander about to find the goods. The main areas have a whole section just for bacon, another just for seafood, another for chicken and beef and a whole section just for desserts.

20130518-231947.jpgLily and I picked up a few macaroons… these are our most fave treat these days and we have never met a macaroon we haven’t chomped up in our bellies!

The charming fella who sold us the macaroons gave us an extra few just for fun! This made Lily’s day! She couldn’t understand why – if he was selling these treats – would he then just give us a few for free. I said it was because he was nice.. and it was a nice thing to do! Then Lily said she was going to give away free treats when she opened her food truck. Spread the good deed! So thanks Mille Feuille Bakery! for my inspiring my sweet lilypie.

Ok so if you wander around the Googa Mooga you will find small pockets of food everywhere. We came across the Spotted Pig Haus. The Spotted Pig is Matt’s go to gastro pub in NYC! This yummy treat did not disappoint. 20130518-231710.jpg

20130518-231644.jpgI also had the ribs from.. yet another place I forgot. Sooooo good and the coleslaw it came with was equally yum.

Then we had the duck corn dog from  JAMES. It got mixed reviews from Lily and Matt… I liked it. It was a bit rich but the batter was deep-fried crunchy goodness and the duck was moist and perfectly cooked.

The rainy sprinkles had us looking for shade… which the gorgeous trees in prospect Park were all too happy to provide. Also I realized that this was the first time Lily has taken cover from the rain under a tree… she said “this is how it’s going to be in the jungle” – because she’s going to be a “jungle girl” when she grows up remember20130518-231627.jpg

So there we were… minding our own business… and BAM… we ran into some Game of Thrones styled knights. Full with funky accents and brawn and metal gear.

They said, ” well hello there princess” and Lily just gushed!  I bet these guys go all Game of Thrones crazy on sundays!

Next a CENTAUR… like a full on CENTAUR stopped us.

Just as we thought we had entered some alternate universe… we saw this… makes sense.

Lily was thrilled! She has never beed to a ren-faire and this was such a treat.. to see princess and fairies and centaurs and knights dancing to house music and walking along side her. I wish I had captured her face… she was in such a creative element. I can’t imagine what was going on in her mind! 20130518-231606.jpg

Oh yea and then Big Gay Ice Cream! Bronies for-evah!! 20130518-231919.jpg

Googa Mooga was a TON better than last year.. the differences … the festival capped the attendees so there were’nt a gazillion people running you over. There were many many MANY bathrooms everywhere so the bathroom wait was none. The food lines were no problem either. This year the vendors were asked to only serve one or 2 items on their menu… this helped keep the lines moving. Cell phones worked! Last year when the vendors ran out of food and has to call for back up… cell phones did not work. Not a problem this year. Lots of ATMS… but beware to $4 charge! It was also kid friendly… lots of green space for Lily to run around. We went on Saturday at 2pm – 5pm. It was packed and the festival was sold out even for general admission but yet we had a great time and the whole thing was well organized. on Sunday… sadly… the festival was cancelled due to rain.. what a shame. Because the Great Googa Mooga was GREAT!
