Flying Purple People Eaters

It was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater…sure looks strange to me!

Remember that song?

If you do remember that song…I have been pondering something all these years… why are they wearing ” short shorts“? hmmm. Just asking!

If you don’t … you are truly missing out!

You can have a listen here —> (CUE SOUND) …and then proceed with this post.

Ok,  so we had to make cupcakes for Lily’s Kindergarten Halloween Party. For all you international readers, I do have international readers…they are highly esteemed members of …my family!

According to Wikipedia: Halloween is an annual holiday observed on October 31, primarily in the United StatesCanadaIreland, and theUnited Kingdom. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints’ Day, but is today largely a secular celebration. Common Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns,ghost toursbonfiresapple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.

Ok so back to my story, we had to make cupcakes for the Kindergarten party. Lily and Matt decided to do something spectacular!

Matt decided to make monster cupcakes, Lily said let’s put blood in them, then they said, let’s make worms in dirt cupcakes, then it became graveyard cupcakes with bodyparts crawling out and they figured that was too scary … and so did the class teacher ( nothing scary or violent allowed)… so somehow and they comprimised and came up with One-eyed, One-horned Flying Purple People Eater cupcakes…with blood.

It was cute and friendly and a HIT!!

I know right!!! how utterly cute!

So this is how Matt and lily made them.

You make a cupcake and add strawberry syrup to it when it’s baked HALFWAY- this is the blood. Just poke a hole and add the syrup.

Add purple icing- add food coloring to white icing.

Add the eye.

gummy eyes

The horn= candy corn

Add the Wings= Wafers Cut to shape with BAT shaped cookie cutters

The mouth = gummy worm

Enjoy your sugar rush!

Keep your dogs safe this season

*This post is Dog heavy… I have a dog and I know what he does. Cats are different and so are Iguanas, but I don’t have either so I can’t speak about them.*

Halloween can be a very dangerous time for dogs…not just Halloween but also Christmas…ok this entire rest of the year is dangerous for your pets.

Jonah ate Lily’s candy today and it made me think… “this crazy dog it going to get himself killed eating candy this season!”

Tips  for making sure your four-legged members of the family are safe and secure during this season.

  • Candy: No candy for dogs ummk! Chocolate is really bad for your dog, you know this already right, but so is all candy… because the silver foil wraps don’t digest easily and little Fido can’t unwrap the goodness before he eats it. In addition most candy contains this thing called – XYLITOLa common sugar substitute that can be deadly for pets…bad stuff. toxic! So watch the candy. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
  • Electric Cords: Fortunately Jonah is not one for chewing on things that don’t smell good. But some dogs do eat random things in the home… extension cords being one of them. I use Gaffer Tape to tape down my extension cords during this season. You pet could get electrocuted if he/ she ate an extension cord.
  • Pumpkins : Dogs like food. So they will eat it. So watch the jack-o-lanterns this season. If your dog eats the jack-o-lantern, he could get burned and then your house could get burned…be careful. I purchase electric votives from Target because between Jonah and Lily…someone might get hurt!
  • Costumes: Contrary to human belief NOT ALL DOGS LIKE TO PLAY DRESS UP. Please consider your dogs feelings. While some pups might love the glamour of it all, others… like Jonah hate it. They’re DOGS!  They don’t want to wear a tutu!  Jonah is a ladybug for Halloween. We have wings for him that he does not even notice.
  • Front Door: Not all dogs like people in costume and when that harmless ghoul or pirate or spiderman comes along, your four-legged protector might just want to defend your honor and attack! This does not bode well for your ‘friendly neighbourhood’ image. So please keep the four-legged ones away from the front door. Baby-gates come in handy!
  • Black Cats: Even though I don’t have a cat, I do like them. Halloween brings out the crazies ya know and if you have a BLACK CAT, please watch it like a hawk. Black cats are often the recipients of mean Halloween related cruelty. So keep em close.

Have fun this Halloween and do share your tips with me!

Unstoppable – Movie Promo

Last week I went to a screening of the upcoming movie Unstoppable. While I can’t give you a review of this movie…I can however tell you about it.

UNSTOPPABLE  opens November 12…one day before my birthday..*ahem* *hint*

Inspired by actual events, “Unstoppable” is an adrenaline rush fueled by director Tony Scott’s signature mark of propulsive action rooted in the reality of ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances.  A veteran train engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine) race the clock to stop an unmanned runaway train – effectively a missile the size of a skyscraper — and prevent disaster in a heavily populated area.

***So obviously I wouldn’t be posting this on my precious blog if I did not like the flick***

….so here’s the real deal. I liked it!

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

Enter Lily-

(Excited. she drops her backpack on the floor and runs to me and says…)

Lily: Mom I discovered something today, it’s really true.

Me: Oh yea, what?

Lily: I’m not the only beautiful girl in the world. Today I saw two big girls who were really beautiful.

Me: Oh Lily there’s many beautiful girls but to me you are the most beautiful (pinching cheeks and going in for a kiss)

Lily: (frustrated) No Mom! You just don’t know about the world.

Sustainable kitchen

My big promise to myself and my family has been to be sustainable, in many ways.

This is a key word these days, I write grants for my dance company and other things and everyone wants to know, “How will you sustain yourself, your company, your product..etc”

Sustainability: For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well-being, which in turn depends on the well-being of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources. (Wikipedia)

Here are a few things…lets say 10 things…to mainatin a sustainable kitchen

* please note* – there is so much more you could do, you should do. This is just 10 easy simple ways to help you get going on cleaning up our earth and cleaning up our bodies. *

10 tips for sustainable kitchen

1. PLEASE support your local farmers market. Your purchase will DIRECTLY support local farms. Also did you know that large grocery chains such as  Stop’n Shop now have a great Local Farm section. I went to a great event for Stop ‘N Shop where the company reps talked about the importance of locally grown foods and community sustainability.

2. Read PLU codes: YES you should look at the sticker on your produce and if it starts with a 9, then the item is organic. Get it!

3. Freeze berries: I like to buy berries when they are in season and super inexpensive at the market and eat a lot and freeze the rest. You can use them for multiple things later in the year. Lily likes to eat frozen blueberries.

4. Organic Milk: We have made a commitment to buy hormone free or organic milk, eggs and meats. It’s so good for you and if you have children, their development will not be accelerated as apparently happens when you consume chemicals in foods.

5. Glass containers:  Get rid of plastic and go with glass. It’s much better than plastic, although some plastics have an acrylic coating that is BPA free. I’ll opt for the all glass container option.

6. Plant a veggie garden: You’d be surprised how easy it is to plant and grow your veggies. My tomatoes grow like weeds and my basil plants compliment them nicely.

7. Honey: We do honey shots most mornings especially in the cold NY winters. It soothes the throat and is just plain ole good for you. If you must use sugar,  use raw sugar.

8. Reusable bags: I know you already know this. I do too. Even though I have a fine selection of reusable totes to choose from, I STILL forget to take them to the grocery store or Target. Yes take your tote to all stores, eliminate the use or need for plastic bags.

9. Drink H20: Simple and true. The health, mental and beauty benefits of water are beyond amazing… so drink up! And try not to buy your water in plastic water bottles, use a purifier   if you have to. Our town water works just fine for us. Except it does not have fluoride so we take a supplement. Check with your town about your water.

10. Fresh fruit and veggies: I  have lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the house at all times.  make sure we have a heaping serving of fresh fruit at every meal. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

11. (bonus) use micro fiber cloths: NO PAPER TOWELS! Don’t do it,  use Micro Fiber cloths instead. I bought  a set of 6 for $4.99 at TJMaxx. You can just wash them by hand or stick em in your washing machine. No useless waste goes out into the universe.

* Are you making any sustainable changes in your family or in your world? Please share.
